Meet the Team

Vicar: Barney de Berry

Barney has been the Vicar here at SMB since 2010. He trained at Wycliffe Hall Oxford, served his curacy at St Alkmund’s in Derby and was Associate Vicar at Holy Trinity Cambridge before joining us here in Canterbury. Barney is married to Ruth who is a Doctor and they have three very energetic boys keeping them busy! In his spare time Barney enjoys cycling and watching most sports.

Associate Vicar: Craig Hunt

Craig joined the team as Associate Vicar in June 2016 having served as Curate at SMB since 2012. He trained at St Mellitus College in London and worked for a local parish church in Earl’s Court. He became a Christian through the witness of some friends at Durham University where he studied Geography. His particular responsibilities include overseeing the Fellowship Groups and discipleship at SMB. He is married to Becky and they have a little boy called Noah. He likes playing football, squash and cycling, as well as good coffee and fine wine.

Curate: Stephen Carter

Stephen joined SMB as Curate in July 2016 and has responsibility ministering to young adults and students at SMB. He became a Christian at 13, finding Jesus in the midst of his disillusionment with life and faith. Getting a sense of God’s love for the church and the world, he felt a call towards ordination as a teenager but knew that call was on hold. Before joining SMB he toured with a Youth For Christ rock band, studied theology at London School of Theology, and trained as a teacher in Cambridge, before spending four years teaching Secondary RE in Dunstable. He’s married to the wonderful Tiffany who returned from living in Uganda in order to marry him. Lucky guy. Stephen enjoys playing rugby, has recently joined a local side, but invariably complains about his aches and pains.

Church Manager: KELLY JOHNSTON

Kelly 2
Kelly joined us in July 2012 as an administrator on a temporary basis and never left! She is now our Church Manager and oversees the premises and all administration at the church. Before joining the team at SMB Kelly worked in credit control for a company in Belfast. Kelly is married to Maurice and they have a one year old called Seth. She loves travelling and exploring new places, spending time with family and friends and is an avid supporter of Irish rugby (which the staff team take great delight in!!).

Children's Worker: Miriam Taylor

Mim joined the staff team in 2011 as an intern before becoming the full time Children’s Worker in 2012. She had moved to Canterbury to study Primary Education at university and decided to stay and make this wonderful city her home. Mim can’t sit still for long, and in her spare time can be found dressmaking, jiving the night away, baking and hanging out with friends. She is the only veggie on a staff team of keen carnivores, but wins them round with the occasional homemade cake or two.  Mim loves a challenge and can often be found exploring other cities with the aim of visiting all English cathedrals in two years!

Ministry Support Worker: Ben Hackett

Ben Hacket
Ben joined the staff team in January 2018 as Ministry Support Worker.  He oversees the musical worship at SMB as well as facilitating and resourcing the youth work.  He became a Christian at Soul Survivor when he was 12 and can’t wait to lead his first trip to Soul Survivor in the summer.  He plays piano, drums but most of all loves to lead worship – especially a good hymn!  Ben’s happy place is hosting a dinner party – cooking up some tasty food, sipping some good wine, listening to some funky music and laughing with friends.  He is engaged to the lovely Laura and is looking forward to a (hopefully) sunny summer wedding!

Church Secretary: Kez BAWTREE

Kez joined us part-time in January 2015 after graduating from Nottingham Trent University where she studied Youth Justice. She started working as SMB's Church Secretary full-time in April 2016. She spends most of her time keeping the website updated, writing Family News, answering emails and phone calls and accepting any offers of a cup of tea. She enjoys travelling and has spent 7 months in Australia, India and Nepal with YWAM and has also worked with 24-7 Prayer for 2 months in Ibiza. She recently married Zac, and is still trying to get used to the name change (sorry if you receive any emails from Kez Clayfield).

Hospitality Officer: Janis Regan

Janis joined St Mary Bredin in June 2010 as the Hospitality Officer, a job that has really grown over the last 5 years, covering external and internal bookings, overseeing the kitchen and refreshments. She is widowed with 2 grown married children and four lively grandchildren and has recently moved out of Canterbury to Herne Bay and is loving living by the sea.

Filippo visited SMB for the first time in 2015, upon the invitation of a friend. Soon after, life put him in front of tough tests that he could only overcome with the support of his new friends at SMB and his faith that was growing deeper and stronger. Filippo has a 10 year-old English-Italian bilingual son, Morgan, who lives in Wales and who, during the half terms, loves spending time playing football with his friends at SMB, while wearing his Juventus jersey. Filippo is not only the SMB Caretaker, but also involved with the Children's Team, helps with various courses here and almost never misses the Men's Prayer Breakfasts at 7:20am(!!). Filippo knows his job is very important because it represents a way to contribute to the SMB community and family, who have been (and are) so kind to him. On a larger scale, Filippo also contributes to the community by being a Canterbury Street Pastor and is currently being trained to become a team leader.

Financial Administrator: Dawn Gale

Dawn joined SMB in 2011 in the role of part time Financial Administrator after moving from London to the country outside Canterbury.  She worked in the City of London in Accountancy and Treasury roles for many years dealing with Company Accounts and Corporate Treasury functions, and before joining SMB she worked for a local charity in Ramsgate - The Christian Housing Trust.  Dawn lives in a small village in the countryside near Sandwich and enjoys walking with her dog Jessie, visiting with friends and her family.
